So, I thought this summer would be my ultimate time of productivity in the jewelry realm. But sometimes, life just doesn’t go as planned. Between a substantial life change, a roommate swap, and a (much needed & enjoyed but time consuming nonetheless) long family vacation in the middle of nowhere, I barely got anything done that I was hoping to complete before my school job starts again in September, but I did make some progress and intend to initiate some major changes soon.
Yesterday, I finally got around to listing new items in the Etsy shop, and started the process of tweaking my shop listings to make them more concise. That process will continue over the coming weeks, along with a few more changes. The biggest change will be a shift in the shop tagline. “Jewelry with a message, for the urban fashionista” proved descriptive and catchy, and at the time when I came up with it, I thought it accurately reflected my concept and my target audience. The concept remains; since day one my pieces have always had a story to tell and a message to convey. What I’ve realized is that the tagline came from a necessity for one, not from a true connection with that particular audience, and that my target audience is in fact much broader than “the urban fashionista”. My pieces are for those who are drawn to them, feel the power of stones, and love literature, mythology, language, and symbols. Those who seek a unique method of self presentation, and those who find body adornment and intellectual expression to be interconnected. I neither feel the need nor see how to encapsulate all of that, and more, in one tagline. The audience factor will be dropped, and the remaining shortened tagline will be changed, in presentation more than concept.
With the new tagline, other changes will follow suit. A new shop banner will be unfurled, along with small edits in the About sections on this blog, the shop, Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram to reflect the new tagline’s wording. Since the new tagline doesn’t change the concept of Soliloquy Jewelry, no major overhauls are necessary. Aside from these changes, I’ll also be reshooting old items (jeesh, my first photo shoots are cluttered!), reshooting and restocking the ever-popular stackers that used to be in the shop, and FINALLY posting my Etsy shop About section that has been in the final stages of editing for months.
Unfortunately, this is not the fun stuff. All of this focus on marketing and social media is going to take away from my actual studio time, but it has to get done. I am still working on pieces, though! Currently finishing up The Calypso Collection, an end-of-summer collection inspired by one of my favorite mythological figures, Calypso: an island nymph from Homer’s Odyssey, who possessed profound knowledge and power. More to come on her when the line is released, but for now here is a sneak preview of some pieces and materials.
Baltic amber, shark teeth, garnet, arrowheads, wampum, seaglass, turquoise, ocean jasper, coral, seashells, opal, and tourmaline are all present in this collection. These materials will be woven into tribal, symbolic, tropical pieces entrenched in the enchanting mythology of Calypso, and the primitive nature of her island, Ogygia (its name means “primeval”, “primal”, and “at earliest dawn”). To keep up with the progress of this collection and other pieces, make sure to follow Soliloquy Jewelry on Instagram, @soliloquyjewelry.
Time to hit the studio! More to come soon.
